Cubs Take Game One with Commanding 9-2 Win
North Siders Shut Down Brewers in Series Opener
Solid Pitching, Timely Hitting Propel Cubs to Victory
The Chicago Cubs took an early lead in their National League Divisional Series matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. With a commanding 9-2 victory in Game 1, the Cubs set the tone for the rest of the series.
Pitching Dominance
Starting pitcher Jake Arrieta was in top form for the Cubs, allowing no earned runs on just two hits through six innings. He struck out nine batters and walked none.
The bullpen held things down the rest of the way, with Wade Davis, Carl Edwards, and Pedro Strop combining to allow no runs on just two hits in the final three innings.
Offensive Production
The Cubs' offense provided plenty of support for Arrieta. Jason Heyward led the way with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs.
Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo each drove in two runs, while Ben Zobrist added a solo home run.
Defensive Gems
The Cubs' defense also came up big, making several key plays throughout the game. Catcher Willson Contreras threw out a would-be base stealer in the first inning to end the threat.
First baseman Rizzo made a diving stop on a hard-hit ground ball in the third inning to prevent a run from scoring.
Series Outlook
With the win, the Cubs now have a 1-0 lead in the series. Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday night at Wrigley Field.
If the Cubs can win Game 2, they will be in a great position to close out the series in Milwaukee on Thursday and Friday.
