Israeli Airstrike Targets Iran in Apparent Retaliation
Jerusalem Responds to Drone and Missile Attack
Counterstrike Destroys Consular Building in Damascus
Jerusalem, Israel (CNN) - Israeli forces appear to have carried out a counterstrike on Iran five days after Tehran targeted Israel with a barrage of drones and missiles, according to multiple sources.
The Israeli military said it intercepted dozens of Iranian drones and missiles on Sunday, with no casualties reported. However, it is now believed that Israeli forces have retaliated by launching an airstrike in Syria.
The airstrike reportedly destroyed a consular building located next to Iran's embassy in Damascus. Syrian state media confirmed the attack, but did not provide any details about casualties or damage.
Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid has declined to comment on the alleged airstrike, but he has vowed to defend Israel against any aggression.
"We will not tolerate any attacks on our sovereignty," Lapid said in a statement.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on Sunday.
While Israel has been one of Iran's biggest foes, it is believed that Jerusalem saw little strategic benefit from Raisi's death.
However, the recent missile and drone attack by Iran has prompted Israel to respond with a show of force, demonstrating its willingness to defend its borders and deter future aggression.
