Cruise Ship COVID Cases Surge in New Year

CDC Updates Guidance After Spike in Infections

Anecdotal reports indicate a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 cases on cruise ships in the first 10 days of the new year. In response to this surge, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its guidance for cruise ship operators.

The CDC's new guidance recommends that cruise ships implement stricter social distancing measures and require all passengers to wear masks in indoor public spaces. The CDC also recommends that cruise ships increase testing frequency for passengers and crew members. Singapore ceased port calls for all cruise ships on 13 March 2020. The United States Coast Guard declared that foreign-flagged.

For now, CDC guidance allows cruise ships to relax measures such as mask usage if at least 95% of passengers and 95% of the cruise ship crew are fully vaccinated. As of January 26th, there were 452 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on cruise ships reported by the CDC.
