A Devastating Outbreak Leaves a Trail of Destruction

Nearly 150 tornadoes touched down across the Midwest on Friday, March 31, 2023, leaving a devastating trail of destruction.

The outbreak, which was the largest in over two years, brought a level of devastation not seen since the 2011 Super Outbreak. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued a High Risk level 55, its highest level of warning, for the first time in over two years. This was only the 12th time ever that the SPC has issued such a warning.

The tornadoes touched down in a wide swath of states, from Mississippi to Ohio and Illinois. Several large and destructive tornadoes were reported, including an EF4 tornado that struck near Dayton, Ohio, and an EF3 tornado that leveled the town of Keota, Iowa. Preliminary reports indicate that there were multiple fatalities and injuries.

The National Weather Service is still assessing the damage from the outbreak, but it is clear that this was a significant event. The tornadoes have left a trail of destruction that will take weeks or even months to clean up.
